Beyblade Evolution offers an intricate RPG challenge on 3DS for fans of both role-play and metal battling spinning tops.
We see most games coming these days. Either the marketing and PR machine does its job or we hear about them on fine sites like these. However, there is a really rare breed of game that lurks beneath the radar of both blockbuster promotion and indie novelty. The sleeper hit is generally less immediately impressive that its more showy competitors. They are different for all but most of us have those games no one else rates that people have enjoyed immensely. In our house, it’s Go Vacation, in others it’s Crackdown or possibly games like Tumble and Mutant Mudds.
Beyblade Evolution promises to be another hidden gem, however, it was just recently that I realized why. I’ve spent a week or so previewing the overall game, and what starts as a cartoon-toy funded combat game quickly evolved into an absolute fledged RPG experience.
This sounds like something of a stretch I understand, but I’ve good reason. The overall game revolves around a cyclical story where the gamer grinds through a series of battles to get and customize an ever growing group of beyblade fanfiction spinning tops. That is essentially a party system with almost endless possibilities.
Beyblades in actuality are interesting because you can mix and match different physical elements to adjust the way the spinning tops perform in the arena. The quantity of momentum, movement, defense and attack are controlled in great detail by a series of parts that slot together.
So as opposed to equipping Armour or Weapons or Magic in the overall game, players instead deck out their party of Beyblades with different Spin Tracks, Tips, Spin Gears and Bases. Each item has detailed stats and needs to be carefully used to reach a well rounded group of hero Beyblades since the attack, defense and stamina types.
These are then called upon in numerous battle encounters. Each one features a different location that specifies the way the Beyblades behave and which tactics will work. Each enemy fights with a certain Beyblade which needs to be considered in context of the stadium to choose the best opponent from your party of tops.
uncaptionedPerhaps the best thing about these stripped down RPG mechanics is that you don’t have to endure endless dialogue about different characters liking or not liking, fancying or not fancying each other. Thank heavens!
The battles are played out in realtime, with the 3DS gyroscope being called upon to find out how much momentum you start the fight with. Then you’re able to target and fire Spirit attacks which, if landed correctly, boost your all important momentum (energy).
So there you’ve it. This having dawned upon me I suddenly saw the overall game in a complete new light. While my children like it because of the cartoons and toys, I’ve a complete other take on the game. Now I can’t wait to have my practical the finished product and try the AR battle features and multi-player modes.
